Newborn-12 months

Dr. Karen Hake

Pediatric sleep consultant

I help exhausted parents get the sleep they need and deserve by helping them teach their children the skills to sleep independently in  under 2 weeks.

Does this sound familiar?

  • You wake up multiple times a night to feed your baby and you’re rocking and holding them until they go back to sleep.

  • Bedtime is met with crying and temper tantrums.

  • Your child refuses to lay down or settle down for a nap, just cries instead and takes cat naps.

  • Your child always seems cranky and fussy throughout the day and you’re not sure why they don’t want to sleep.

  • Your baby only sleeps with you and has to be touching you.

  • You don’t feel your best because your mind and body are exhausted from lack of quality sleep. It’s hard for you to do anything because you’re so tired.

What if

  • You were able to lay your baby down to sleep with little to no fussing

  • You and your baby were able to sleep the entire night without waking up multiple times

  • You were able to end co-sleeping and your child was able to fall asleep all by themselves in their own crib

  • You no longer dread the bedtime battles and your bedtime routine was joyful and peaceful

And … all without using the cry it out method ?? I will never have you leave your child to cry all alone for long periods of time. I am dedicated to finding the method that works for you and your family.

After many years of working with children, I understand that each child is unique in their feelings, actions and experiences. With that in mind, I do not believe in cookie cutter approaches and will create a plan that works with your family dynamics.

Here’s the problem

  • You’ve read all the books, blogs and parenting websites and nothing seems to have worked.

  • It’s incredibly daunting and exhausting when you try new methods and don’t see any changes in your baby’s sleep.

  • You're tired and overwhelmed and it’s hard to think straight. You’ve learned about multiple methods but you’re still not sure how to implement them.

It doesn’t have to be this way! I’m here to help!

Imagine if

  • You woke up feeling refreshed and excited to start your day every single morning because you didn’t have to wake up multiple times tending to your crying baby

  • You had a calm bedtime routine and your baby lays down in their crib and they put themselves to sleep

  • You had a couple hours every evening to yourself where you could have a date night, enjoy a bath by yourself, read a book, watch your favorite TV show, etc.

  • You could plan your day around your baby’s consistent nap schedule (your life could be more predictable - you could plan workout in the afternoons, brunch with your friends, get your nails done, etc)

  • You and your partner could have more room in your bed and you’re no longer being kicked or punched throughout the night

ABOUT ME

I am a practicing Pediatric Dentist for over the last 28 years. I educated patients on not only nutrition and oral health, but also the overall health of their children.  I became a certified pediatric sleep consultant because I realized that during counseling my patient’s parents on night time habits that can affect the child dentally, it was obvious that many parents struggle with bedtime and and with multiple wakings during the night.  I wanted to be able to help parents who are struggling to get quality sleep for themselves and their children.

  • Parents with multiple children and need everyone to have quality sleep

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Babies communicate by crying.  So your baby may cry to let you know they are tired, hungry, cold, warm or have a wet/dirty diaper.  So we will always expect a little crying, because how else would your baby tell you what they are feeling.  If you feel distressed when your baby cries, we can always choose a very gentle method of sleep training.  These methods take a little longer, but we can get your child to learn to sleep with the most minimal crying possible.

  • The exact opposite! Studies have shown that children who do not get adequate/recommended sleep show a significant difference in regions of the brain that is responsible for memory, intelligence and well being. Those differences correlated with greater mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and impulsive behaviors in those children who lacked sleep. These children also showed difficulties with memory, problem solving and decision making.

  • I believe that both parents should be on the same page when considering sleep training their child.  While it is easier to have both parents actively working together with implementing the sleep plan, one parent can sleep train their child.

  • Depends! First we have to look at your child’s temperament. Are they typically a calm, happy child or a fussy, cranky child, or the happy child who is stubborn and can turn cranky if they don’t get their way?  Some kids take a bit longer than others but usually within a few days you will see changes. However, some sleep training methods take longer than others. We decide on the method to align with your parenting style, current sleep issues, and your end goal.

  • Absolutely!!!!  You still get to snuggle and hug your baby as they breastfeed. We will change the order in which they feed and sleep!

  • Yes!  While daycares may be rigid in their schedules, we will create a schedule that works best for your child with naps, feeding and playtime.

  • Yes!  I hold a certificate of Special Needs Sleep Consultant.  I understand that with modification of the methods, making small changes over time, we can make an impact on their sleep.

  • With co-sleeping it is very difficult to sleep train.  While it can be done, I do not work with parents who want to continue co-sleeping and try to sleep train their child.  I do however work with parents to room-share with their child.  A child sleeping in the same room can be sleep trained.
