Dr. Karen Hake

Pediatric sleep consultant

As a Pediatric Dentist, Dr. Hake educates her patients on not only nutrition and  oral health, but also the overall health of their children.  She  has a special interest in the pediatric airway.  A child’s airway can affect their sleep, their daytime behaviors and have long term effects on their overall health as an adult.  By identifying and addressing  airway issues early on in the infant/toddler will help the child thrive in their daytime activities and their nighttime sleep.   When counseling her patient’s parents, she noticed that many of the parents were struggling with their children’s sleep.  Whether it was getting their baby/toddler  down to sleep and/or staying asleep through the night.  Being who she is, Dr. Hake wanted to learn more about how babies and children sleep and how they learn to sleep which brought her to getting her certification in sleep training for infants and children and  special needs sleep certified.

The Importance of Sleep

We all know how bad we feel if we do not get the amount of sleep we require.  An infant and child’s sleep requirements are a lot more than an adult.  Quality sleep is essential.   Studies have shown that children who do not get adequate/recommended sleep show a significant difference in regions of the brain that is responsible for memory, intelligence and well being, compared to those children who are getting adequate sleep.  Those differences correlated with greater mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and impulsive behaviors in those children who lacked sleep. These children also showed difficulties with memory, problem solving and decision making.

So if your child is not getting enough sleep, that means you are not getting enough sleep and this affects the health and well being of the entire family.

Children struggle with many challenges that affect their sleep, such as hunger, growing through a growth spurt, uncomfortable, physical discomfort, unable to soothe themselves, over tired and over stimulated.  We will identify what struggles your child has and work through them,  and I will support you through the entire process.

I look forward to working with your family to make bedtime a pleasant and anticipated time of the day.  How wonderful it would be to have a peaceful bedtime each evening and a good night’s sleep each night!
