Dr. Karen Hake

Pediatric sleep consultant

I help exhausted parents get the sleep they need and deserve by helping them teach their children the skills to sleep independently in  under 2 weeks.

Does this sound familiar?

  • Bedtime Battles: Your child constantly resists going to bed, arguing and stalling with requests for more time.

  • Nighttime Wakings: They wake up multiple times during the night, needing comfort or reassurance to go back to sleep.

  • Difficulty Falling Asleep:  Your child takes a long time to fall asleep, even after you've followed a bedtime routine.

  • Frequent Nightmares or Anxiety: They experience bad dreams or feel anxious about sleeping alone, leading to restless nights.

  • Daytime Fatigue: Your child often seems tired, cranky, and unable to concentrate during the day, possibly due to insufficient sleep.

  • Co-Sleeping Habits:   Your child refuses to sleep in their own bed and insists on sleeping with you.

These challenges can leave you feeling exhausted and overwhelmed, making it hard to function at your best during the day.

What if

  • You could put your child to bed without the usual bedtime arguments or delays.

  • You and your child were able to sleep the entire night without waking up multiple times.

  • They felt confident and secure sleeping in their own bed.

  • Bedtime became a calm and pleasant routine instead of a stressful event.

  • You were able to end co-sleeping and your child was able to fall asleep all by themselves in their own crib/bed.

  • You could enjoy peaceful evenings and feel refreshed in the morning.

And … all without using the cry it out method ?? I will never have you leave your child to cry all alone for long periods of time. I am dedicated to finding the method that works for you and your family.

After many years of working with children, I understand that each child is unique in their feelings, actions and experiences.  With that in mind, I do not believe in cookie cutter approaches and will create a plan that works with your family dynamics

Here’s the problem

  • You’ve read all the books, blogs and parenting websites and nothing seems to have worked.

  • It’s incredibly daunting and exhausting when you try new methods and don’t see any changes in your child’s sleep.

  • You're tired and overwhelmed and it’s hard to think straight. You’ve learned about multiple methods but you’re still not sure how to implement.

  • Lack of quality sleep in school-age children can lead to academic difficulties, behavioral issues, and emotional problems like anxiety and depression. It also impacts physical health, social interactions, and overall well-being, making it crucial for children to get enough restorative sleep.

It doesn’t have to be this way! I’m

here to help!

ABOUT ME

I am a practicing Pediatric Dentist for over the last 28 years. I educated patients on not only nutrition and oral health, but also the overall health of their children.  I became a certified pediatric sleep consultant because I realized that during counseling my patient’s parents on night time habits that can affect the child dentally, it was obvious that many parents struggle with bedtime and and with multiple wakings during the night.  I wanted to be able to help parents who are struggling to get quality sleep for themselves and their children.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Your child may cry, however crying is a way to express the emotions we are having.  We all cry.. when we are happy, sad, frustrated and angry.  We are changing your child’s routine and they did not have a say about this, so they may initially feel confused, frustrated and maybe a bit angry, those are completely normal reactions to having your routine changed, with that may come tears, but I will teach you how to interpret those cries and how to respond to them.

  • The exact opposite! Studies have shown that children who do not get adequate/recommended sleep show a significant difference in regions of the brain that is responsible for memory, intelligence and well being, compared to those children who are getting adequate sleep.  Those differences correlated with greater mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and impulsive behaviors in those children who lacked sleep. These children also showed difficulties with memory, problem solving and decision making.

  • I believe that both parents should be on the same page when considering sleep training their child.  While it is easier to have both parents actively working together with implementing the sleep plan, however, one parent can sleep train their child.

  • Depends! First we have to look at your child’s temperament, are they typically a calm, happy child or the fussy, cranky child, or the happy child who is stubborn and can turn cranky if they don’t get their way?  Some kids take a bit longer than others but usually within a few days you will see changes, however some sleep training methods take longer than others.   We decide on the method to align with your parenting style, current issue that is occurring and your end goal.

  • Yes!  While daycares may be rigid in their schedules, we will create a schedule that work best for your child with naps, feeding and playtime.

  • Yes!  I hold a certificate of Special Needs Sleep Consultant.  I understand that with modification of the methods, making small changes over time, we can make an impact on their sleep.

  • With co-sleeping it is very difficult to sleep train.  While it can be done, I do not work with parents who want to continue co-sleeping and try to sleep train their child.  I do however work with parents who room-share with their child.  A child sleeping in the same room can be sleep trained.
